BA and MA Programme, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Bayreuth
The University of Bayreuth offers both a BA and an MA programme in Philosophy and Economics, jointly delivered by the philosophy and economics departments. The programme is specifically tailored to provide foundations in both subjects as well as integrate them throughout the degree, while leaving room for students to explore their own interests. While politics is not a core subject in this degree, we consider ourselves part of the PPE community, especially since the addition of a new Chair of Global Political Economy that contributes to the P&E teaching, and given a renewed focus on public policy in our teaching offer. The philosophy department’s research profile also has a strong PPE focus.
BA and MA Programme, Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf
The Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf offers a three-year Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Bachelor program and a two-year Philosophy & Economics (PE) Master program. The program includes approximately 50 students in the BA per year and 20 students in the MA per year and it is designed for an interdisciplinary and close-knit community of students.
What makes the HHU program stand out is its focus on strong analytical skills that prepare students to contribute expert recommendations to policymakers, government agencies, and political institutions. Graduates often pursue careers in think tanks, academic research, or advisory roles for governments and NGOs. Students benefit from a variety of extracurricular activities including guest lectures, discussion events, and an exchange program with the PPE Center at Virginia Tech. There are also opportunities for internships with companies in the Düsseldorf area and the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, to help students bridge academic research with professional practice in policy, NGOs, and related fields.
B.Sc. in Management, Philosophy & Economics (MPE), Frankfurt School of Finance & Management
The MPE is a 3.5-year B.Sc. degree, offered entirely in English, which is aimed at students who merge their keen interest in wider societal issues with a desire to understand how businesses actually work.
Unlike other PPE degrees, the MPE integrates philosophy and economics with business studies, while incorporating politics within core philosophy and economics modules. The resulting set of skills is tailormade for analysing and implementing solutions for urgent problems faced by business and society: Philosophy instructs students in rigorous thinking and reasoning. Economics provides training in state-of-the-art quantitative research methods and detailed understanding of the economic system. And business studies offers hands-on knowledge of how companies are run and what makes them successful. An integrated semester and internship abroad together with our excellent professional networks complete the MPE’s well-rounded educational offering.
Our alumni pursue very successful and wide-ranging careers in political institutions, politics-related areas, finance and economics, consulting, and academia. The MPE offers a tight-knit, supportive and international community where we know all students personally and accompany them closely throughout their academic development.
M.Sc. PEP and PPE-style PhD program at Universität Hamburg, Germany
The major theme of the M.Sc. program Politics, Economics and Philosophy (PEP) is the analysis of individual and collective decisions which is studied from the perspective of the three disciplines involved. Students learn how to combine insights from political science, economics and philosophy in order to solve decision problems arising in such diverse areas as politics, corporate governance, international relations and others.
The graduate program Collective Decision-Making is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is an interdisciplinary program that brings together researchers from economics, philosophy and political science to investigate new questions relating to election procedures, complex deliberative and multilevel decision-making procedures, and the formation of institutions. The aim is to link theoretical and empirical research on collective decision-making.
